About

Sarah Hammond Garden Design is a London based practice which offers a comprehensive garden design consultancy service. We create elegant, contemporary gardens with strong architectural lines and innovative planting that works in harmony with the wider landscape. The practice portfolio ranges from small, urban spaces to large, country gardens. Our ethos is to design and build gardens to last.

Sarah Hammond Garden Design was established in 2005. We work on a range of commissions in London and the South East.

We take a very personal approach and work collaboratively with clients, architects, interior designers and contractors.

All our designs are individually tailored to suit the needs of our clients and are developed in response to the architecture of the building, surrounding landscape and sense of place.

Our designs have a strong, structural framework enhanced by planting to provide all year round interest, seasonality, texture and colour. We enjoy designing gardens in a range of styles and materials.

We coordinate projects from start to finish, often working with clients from the very early stages of their new build or refurbishment works.

We produce detailed computer aided design plans, 3D drawings and hand drawn sketches to help our clients to visualise designs.

We work with a small group of contractors and oversee gardens from concept to final planting and maintenance planning

Whatever the size or budget, our fees are agreed in advance of each design or project implementation stage.

The Team

  • Sarah Hammond

Sarah has been designing gardens for over 10 years. Sarah graduated from the Inchbald School of Design with a distinction. She is a fully accredited registered member of the Society of Garden Designers, the professional association for garden designers in the UK. She has a BA Hons in History.

I take my inspiration from landscapes and architecture, interiors, art and design. I love the vibrancy of London, the calm of the English countryside. I enjoy working collaboratively with clients and developing or creating a real sense of place. I sketch and draw by hand and CAD software to produce illustrated plans and 3D perspectives for clients and clear, concise drawings for contractors.

In 2014 Sarah graduated from KLC School of Design gaining a distinction in her diploma. She is a member of the Society of Garden Designers.

THE STAGES OF THE DESIGN PROCESS: process

Step 1

INITIAL MEETING FOLLOWED
BY PROPOSAL & CLIENT BRIEF

Every new project begins with a consultation with the client on site. This enables us to discuss the project requirements which will become the basis of the client brief and to spend time in the garden to gain a real sense of place. After our visit, we’ll send a client brief summarising our discussions along with our pricing and design fees.

Step 2

SITE SURVEY, ANALYSIS
AND CONCEPT IDEAS

Once the client brief has been agreed and design commissioned, we’ll conduct a sit survey or for more complicated sites, instruct a surveyor to do this on your behalf. The survey is an essential part of the process and forms the basis of all design work, allowing us to create accurate design plans.

Step 3

OUTLINE DRAWINGS DEVELOPED
INTO MASTER PLAN

The first step of the design process is to present our ideas to you as concept drawings for discussion. We then develop these into an outline plan with a series of sketches and 3D visuals to help you imagine how your garden will look once the design is realised. After this meeting, we’ll refine the design to accommodate any feedback you might have given us and produce a final master plan.

Step 4

CONSTRUCTION, LAYOUT
AND TENDER DOCUMENTS

When it comes to the construction phase of your garden, we prepare the necessary tender and contract documents or scope of works and introduce you to professional landscape contractors. We also produce detailed construction drawings should the design require it. During the construction phase we meet regularly with clients and contractors to monitor the implementation of the design and works on site.

Step 5

PLANTING PLAN AND PLANTING SPECIFICATION DETAIL

Once the design is in place we work on a planting plan. We begin by discussing with you images and concept sketches of a planting scheme. We develop this into a detailed planting plan, recommending plants for your garden that will specifically suit the conditions of the site. We’ll accompany this with a plant schedule, sourcing plants from known, and where possible, local nurseries. For the best results we prefer to help or oversee the setting out of plants.

Step 6

AFTERCARE AND
MAINTENANCE ADVICE

We can produce a maintenance schedule to help you keep everything looking at its best throughout the year and we can arrange aftercare visits and maintenance if you require. Our top priority is to ensure that you really enjoy your garden and in stay in contact with you to offer advice and visit the garden as it matures.
